How to Choose a High-Quality CBD Brand

The CBD aisle is crowded, and the marketing is loud. 'Premium,' 'pure,' and 'pharmaceutical-grade' mean nothing on their own. Here are the seven checks that actually separate a quality CBD brand from a re-labeled bulk product.

The 7 checks that matter

Run any brand through this list before you buy. A quality company passes all seven without making you dig.

  • 1. Third-party COA — per batch, recent, and easy to find (see our COA guide).
  • 2. U.S.-grown hemp — domestic farms are subject to agricultural oversight.
  • 3. cGMP-certified facility — the same manufacturing standard used for supplements.
  • 4. Clear dosing — exact milligrams per gummy or per dropper, never a vague 'proprietary blend.'
  • 5. Honest THC disclosure — under 0.3% for full-spectrum, 'non-detect' for isolate.
  • 6. Track record — years in business, real reviews, and a contactable support team.
  • 7. Spectrum transparency — the brand tells you whether a product is full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate.

Marketing claims that mean nothing

Some of the most common words on CBD packaging are unregulated and carry zero verifiable meaning. Do not let them do the deciding for you.

  • 'Pharmaceutical-grade' — not a real, regulated CBD category.
  • 'Pure' / 'premium' — marketing adjectives with no standard behind them.
  • 'Organic' — only meaningful if backed by actual USDA certification.
  • 'Full-spectrum' with no COA — unverifiable without the lab report.
  • Huge mg numbers on the front — meaningless if the COA doesn't confirm them.

Why brand age and track record matter

CBD brands appear and vanish constantly. A company that has been operating for years has had time to be tested by customers, to refine its formulas, and to build a contaminant-free track record. Longevity is not proof of quality on its own, but combined with consistent third-party testing it is a strong signal.

Jolly Green Oil has been formulating and lab-testing hemp products since 2017 — long enough to have served 30,000+ customers and to have published COAs through multiple farm-bill cycles.

A quick brand scorecard

Use this to compare any two brands side by side. Tally the checkmarks — the higher score wins, and any brand missing the COA loses by default.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the most important thing when choosing a CBD brand?

The third-party Certificate of Analysis (COA). A current, batch-specific COA from an independent lab is the single best proof that what's on the label is what's in the jar. Everything else is secondary.

Does 'organic' or 'premium' on the label mean anything?

Not on its own. 'Premium' and 'pure' are unregulated marketing words. 'Organic' only means something if it's backed by actual USDA certification. Rely on the COA and the verifiable signals instead.

Should I buy CBD on Amazon or eBay?

Those marketplaces prohibit true hemp-derived CBD listings, so products sold there are often mislabeled or contain little to no CBD. Buying directly from an established brand is the only way to confirm authenticity and access the COA.

Does a higher price mean higher quality?

Not necessarily. Price reflects branding and margin as much as quality. A mid-priced product with a clean COA, U.S. hemp, and cGMP manufacturing beats an expensive one with no lab report every time.

How can I tell if a CBD brand is legit quickly?

Look for a per-batch COA, U.S.-grown hemp, cGMP manufacturing, exact per-serving dosing, honest THC disclosure, a real track record, and clear spectrum labeling. A brand that passes all seven is the real deal.
