Start with body weight and goal
Two factors set your starting point: how much you weigh and what you're after. Heavier bodies generally need a bit more; a gentle 'take the edge off' goal needs less than a strong end-of-day wind-down.
A widely used rule of thumb is about 1–6 mg of CBD per 10 lbs of body weight per day. The bottom of that range is your starting dose — not your target.
| Body weight | Gentle start | Moderate | Higher (experienced) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100–130 lbs | 10–15 mg | 20–30 mg | 40+ mg |
| 130–180 lbs | 15–20 mg | 25–40 mg | 50+ mg |
| 180–230 lbs | 20–25 mg | 30–50 mg | 60+ mg |
| 230+ lbs | 25–30 mg | 40–60 mg | 70+ mg |
The titration method (how to dial it in)
Titration just means adjusting gradually until you find your spot. It's the method clinicians use, and it works well for CBD.
- Week 1: take your low starting dose at the same time each day. Don't change anything yet.
- Wait the full onset window before judging — 45–90 minutes for gummies, 15–30 for tinctures.
- Keep a one-line note each day: dose, time, and how you felt.
- Week 2: if you need more, increase by about 5–10 mg and hold there for several days.
- Stop increasing once you reach the effect you want. More is not better past your personal threshold.
Gummies vs. tinctures for dosing
Format changes how precisely and how quickly you can dose. Neither is 'better' — they suit different goals.
| Gummies | Tinctures | |
|---|---|---|
| Dose precision | Fixed per piece (e.g. 25mg) | Adjustable by the drop |
| Onset | 45–90 minutes | 15–30 minutes |
| Duration | 4–8 hours | 1–3 hours |
| Best for | Steady daily baseline | Fast, fine-tuned top-ups |
Common dosing mistakes
Most 'CBD didn't work for me' stories come down to one of these.
- Quitting after one dose — CBD often works best with consistent daily use over a week or two.
- Jumping straight to a high dose — that's where side effects like drowsiness show up.
- Not waiting for onset — taking a second gummy at 30 minutes, then both hit at once.
- Inconsistent timing — your body responds better to a steady daily rhythm.
